Colour vision Test: Is It important?

drpreetisharma

Color vision tests are diagnostic tools used to assess an individual's ability to perceive and differentiate colors accurately. These tests help identify any deficiencies or abnormalities in color vision, which can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired due to various factors.

How do we test for Colour Vision :

1: We use Ishihara color plates which involves a series of plates containing coloured dots arranged in specific patterns. People with normal color vision can identify numbers or shapes embedded within the dots, while individuals with color vision deficiencies may struggle to see or identify them correctly.

2: Another test is the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test, which evaluates the ability to arrange colored tiles in a specific order based on hue. This test assesses the precision of color discrimination and can detect subtle color vision deficiencies.

How we Interpret the results/ normal Range for colour vision test

Results are given based on number of plates identified correctly by the patient.

Normal range is 18-21 plates out of 21 plates shown to the patient.

Is There any Treatment available for Colour Vision

Congenital color vision deficiencies, there is currently no cure.

However, individuals can adapt to their condition by using strategies such as memorizing the positions of traffic lights based on their order from top to bottom or relying on the brightness of colors rather than their hue.

Acquired color vision deficiencies caused by factors like eye diseases or medication side effects, treating the underlying condition or discontinuing the medication may improve color vision.

It's important to note that color vision deficiencies do not typically pose significant health risks or impair daily functioning. However, certain professions, such as those involving color-sensitive tasks (e.g., graphic design, aviation), may have specific requirements regarding color vision.

If you suspect any issues with your color vision, it's recommended to consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist who can perform the necessary tests and provide appropriate guidance based on your individual situation.
