What is LASIK ?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that aims to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. It is a popular and effective method of vision correction that has been performed on millions of people worldwide.
What actually happens in LASIK ?
During LASIK, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, which is the transparent front part of the eye. By altering the shape of the cornea, the laser helps to focus light properly onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision.
Types of Laser Refractive Eye surgery
1: Flap Based : Imagine your cornea as a book. We open the front page of book ( superficial layer of cornea) and laser the exposed part of the book beneath the front page.that means we laser the exposed part of cornea after elevation of its flap or superficial layer
Now this Flap can be elevated either by BLADE or LASER
If Blade is used to open the page of book ( elevate the corneal flap) then the procedure is called microkeratome based lasik
If Laser is used to elevate the flap then it is called as Femtosecond Lasik or BLADELESS LASIK
2: Flapless + Bladeless Lasik
In this method even the flap elevation ( page opening) is not required.Laser is appplied directly on the surface of cornea. It is called as SMILE procedure
How to choose the procedure?
It will depend on your glass prescription and also affordability.Though all the 3 methods are relatively safer, Femto and SMILE are generally more recommended since they are BLADELESS methods
What is the procedure to get LASIK done from your centre?
1: Consultation: The first step is to schedule a consultation with an ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive surgery. They will evaluate your eyes, discuss your medical history, perform various eye tests, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for LASIK.
2: Preoperative preparation: If you are deemed eligible for LASIK, you will be given instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. This may involve avoiding contact lenses for a specific period before the procedure and using eye drops as prescribed.
3: Pre-LASIK work up is done .Few imaging tests like PENTACAM and Topography will be advised before deciding the eligibility for lasik.
4: Postoperative care
After the procedure, you will be given instructions on how to care for your eyes during the recovery period. This may involve using prescribed eye drops, avoiding strenuous activities, and wearing protective eyewear.
It is important to note that LASIK is a surgical procedure, and like any surgical intervention, it carries some risks and potential side effects. These can include dry eyes, glare, halos around lights, fluctuating vision, and temporary discomfort. However, serious complications are rare.
To determine if LASIK is right for you, it is crucial to consult with an experienced eye care professional who can evaluate your individual circumstances and provide personalized advice.
